There are 50 VORs (Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range) ground stations dotted across the British Isles, from Shetland in the North to the Channel Islands in the South, and each one has been faithfully recreated in this package. VORs are strange and unique structures and despite being slowly phased out across the UK, they are a fundamental part of the air navigation system and play a crucial … read more role in determining an aircraft’s heading or bearing relative to the VOR station.

As a new pilot setting the aircraft’s radio navigation and flying the plane along the VOR’s bearing can be initially tricky, but once mastered, the joy of spotting the VOR ground station precisely where the instruments indicate can be a truly satisfying experience, and one we have tried to replicate in this package.

Despite all doing the same job, there are a variety of styles and designs across all the 50 VOR stations.

Features:

• All 50 VORs across the British Isles
• 8 different VOR lattice types
• 5 different VOR building types
• Full Physical Based Rendering (PBR) textures throughout
• A wide variety of vegetation, walls & fences, and ground clutter
• Animated people and static vehicles
• Ground merging and terraforming
• Merging with existing airports and airfields
• Points of Interest for each VOR station have been added

    1. Yes, the in-game VORs work as expected. But they are “virtual” VOR of sorts, in that they have their frequency assigned and emit their signals from a particular geographical location without however having a visual representation. This add-on fixes that, placing a visible VOR antenna at each VOR location.

Hopefully no one will whine about the fact that they are for looks only and do not function as VORs. Thanks as always, SimPlaza!

    1. I didn’t have you down as one of those naughty pirates Ray. I guessed that AVSIM mods were all holier than thou 😀

We are holier than thou, and I would remind you to never forget that. But who doesn’t like free aircraft and scenery? If I had to give up one of AvSim or SimPlaza, that’s an easy call. There’s nothing like SimPlaza anywhere on the ‘Net. It has saved me thousands in scenery I would have bought alone. As an aside, one of the reasons I was so anti-MSFS over in the official P3D forums was because I was irritated at having to buy all new aircraft and scenery when I had spent more than $6K for P3D addons, and I got defensive in a somewhat childish way. SimPlaza has literally changed my life.

As far as the VORs actually functioning, that’s because they (most of the ones that still function) already were in MSFS. They just weren’t represented by models. Repeat: This add-on does not create VORs that you can use. It just adds them to the scenery. The benefit of having these for VFR flying should be obvious and anyone who flies over there should download them. It’s not like you framerate in the countryside is going to crater.
